MAXIMUS BEAUTY, a Maiden Special Weight winner here last May, came off an 11-month lay-off to win a seven-furlong event at Churchill Downs by a neck. The 4-year-old filly from her sire’s second crop raced up close from the start, challenged for the lead near the top of the stretch and eventually wore down her foe to get the victory. She is a Philip Maas homebred out of the Invasor (ARG) mare, Invasor Beauty, and is trained by Joe Sharp.
ALTA RITA notched her fourth victory after a troubled trip to take a five-furlong turf sprint by 1 3/4 lengths. The versatile 5-year-old mare was no more than 3 1/2 lengths back early. She was blocked with no room to go in upper stretch, but got through a slim opening along the rail and won going away. Bred by Ponder Hill, Inc. out of Goodbye Beautiful, by Goodbye Doeny, ALTA RITA now has wins on dirt, turf and all-weather.
