Multiple Graded SW QURBAAN to Stud
Monday, November 4, 2019

Shadwell Stable’s multiple graded stakes winner QURBAAN came out of his Bernard Baruch H.-G2 victory with a slight injury and has been retired to stand at Nashwan Stud on Shadwell Farm in 2020 for a fee of $5,000 live foal. Stallion manager Kent Barnes reported, “Qurbaan has a slight injury but it will require some stall rest, forcing him to miss the main objectives this fall, so the decision was made to retire him.”

QURBAAN is by the solid sire of sires Speightstown, out of stakes winner and G1-placed Flip Flop (FR). Purchased for $300,000 as a weanling by Shadwell, QURBAAN began his career in France, winning both starts at two at Deauville and Chantilly, respectively. After a trip to Dubai where he was fifth in the UAE 2,000 Guineas-G3, QURBAAN returned to France where he won twice, including a stakes at Deauville and was twice stakes-placed from four starts.

The following season, he was a stakes winner and Group-placed in France before heading to the U.S. in 2018. In his first start in America, QURBAAN took Saratoga’s Bernard Baruch H.-G2, was third in the Shadwell Turf Mile-G1 and runner-up in the Ft. Lauderdale S.-G2 in three starts that season. This year, QURBAAN proved much the best to win the Bernard Baruch H.-G2 by 2 1/2 lengths under a hand ride, in what was to be his final appearance. Earlier in the season, the son of Speightstown made five other starts, placing in four graded stakes, including the Maker’s 46 Mile-G1 and the Old Forester Turf Classic-G1 where he finished runner-up by a half-length to Bricks and Mortar.

“QURBAAN was a barn favorite and was unlucky in some of his close finishes,” said trainer Kiaran McLaughlin. “He was extremely consistent and versatile winning on both firm and soft ground,” continued McLaughlin.

From 22 starts, QURBAAN had seven wins, and won or placed in nine Graded stakes, earning $854,408.
