Shadwell History

The Bluegrass Region of Central Kentucky, abundant in limestone-rich soil and rolling hills, is world renowned as being the premier locale for raising Thoroughbreds. It is here that Shadwell Farm produces a remarkable array of talented runners.

Success has come to Shadwell as a result of assembling all the necessary ingredients for a top-notch program. "Shadwell's global success is the result of hands-on management," said Rick Nichols, the farm's vice president and general manager. Under his direct supervision, Shadwell built an outstanding facility on the best land available and is home to many of the world's top broodmares. "With racing and breeding programs in Ireland, England, and America, Shadwell pulls everything together into one successful unit," Mr. Nichols added. Qualified professionals at the farm provide the requisite leadership to achieve Shadwell's goals. In a short time, Shadwell has produced the winners of nine classic races:

  • SAKHEE, Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe
  • NASHWAN, Epsom Derby and Two Thousand Guineas
  • ERHAAB, Epsom Derby
  • SHADAYID, English One Thousand Guineas
  • HARAYIR, English One Thousand Guineas
  • MEHTHAAF, Irish One Thousand Guineas
  • SNOW BRIDE, Epsom Oaks
  • TA RIB, French One Thousand Guineas

At the farm's stallion division, Nashwan Stud, several of the world's best-bred stallions and proven runners help to ensure Shadwell's influence for generations to come. We currently stand eight stallions under the supervision of Kent Barnes. Aljabr was a precocious winner of the Grade 1 Sussex Stakes while setting a course record. Dayjur was European champion sprinter. A son of sire of sires Danzig, Dumaani was a record-setting miler. Two time horse of the year, Invasor, won 9 G1 races at 7 different tracks. Jazil won the G1 Belmont Stakes and is a half to G1 Belmont Stakes winner Rags to Riches. Versatile Intidab registered a sensational 120 Beyer Speed Figure. By Mr. Prospector, Kayrawan won on three continents. And finally we have international campaigner Swain, the most consistent globetrotter of the 1990s.
